LDCFM Responds to a Structure Fire in North Lawrence Lawrence, KS –
On January 24, 2025, at 1:28 PM, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical (LDCFM) responded to a structure fire at 839 Elm Street. Initial reports to the Douglas County Emergency Communications Center indicated that the back porch and kitchen were on fire. Additional information indicated that the two occupants had self-evacuated from the building, however, there were pets in the home. LDCFM Engine 1 arrived on scene at 1:34 PM and reported a working fire in a small one-story house. LDCFM Engine 1 crew quickly extinguished the working exterior porch fire in the back of the house, then transitioned to the interior of the house to extinguish the fire that had extended into the kitchen and attic space. Additional LDCFM crews performed a search of the house and located and removed the pets to safety. LDCFM crews provided care, including oxygen, to some of the pets. The Lawrence Humane Society was requested and arrived to assist in providing services for the pets. There was one reported minor injury to a firefighter, and no injuries were reported from the residents. American Red Cross was contacted and is currently assisting the residents. A total of 4 fire apparatus, 3 medic units, and 2 Battalion Chiefs responded (23 total firefighters). The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by LDCFM investigators.
