Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Chief Announces Departure, Celebrating Departmental Achievements Lawrence, KS
Lawrence, KS – The City of Lawrence has announced the upcoming departure of Fire Chief Richard Llewellyn from his role as head of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical (LDCFM). Under Chief Llewellyn’s leadership, the department has achieved major advancements in public safety, service, and innovation for the Lawrence and Douglas County community.
Chief Llewellyn’s tenure has been marked by a values-driven approach, focusing on partnership and community well-being. He spearheaded a department rebranding effort to emphasize collaboration between the City and County, and introduced new mutual aid agreements with neighboring agencies for enhanced regional emergency response—the first updates since 1998.
Committed to professional growth within LDCFM, Chief Llewellyn implemented a professional portfolio program to support future leaders and introduced the Mobile Integrated Health initiative, which optimizes medical response to better serve the community and reduce strain on emergency services.
“Chief Llewellyn’s contributions to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical have created a lasting legacy,” said City Manager Craig Owens. “We are grateful for his leadership and wish him success in his future endeavors.”
With a 26-year career that included key roles in Washington State, Chief Llewellyn brought expertise in both public health and data-driven strategies to LDCFM. He holds master’s degrees from Eastern Washington University and Harvard University and has completed advanced training at the National Fire Academy and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Chief Llewellyn’s last day with LDCFM will be Friday, December 6.
