The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Chabad House
For 18 years, Rabbi Zalman and Nechama Tiechtel have been a cornerstone of the University of Kansas Jewish community, affectionately known as the Jewhawks. In 2006, they opened their doors to just four students for Shabbos dinner. Today, the weekly gatherings have grown exponentially, serving as a hub for Jewish students to connect, learn, and celebrate their heritage.
Chabad at KU has become more than just a place; it’s a home away from home. Students find solace, inspiration, and a sense of belonging within its walls. The Tiechtels have fostered a vibrant community, building lifelong relationships with thousands of students and alumni.
But as the community has grown, so too has the need for a larger space. The current Chabad House, though filled with warmth, has struggled to accommodate the increasing number of students seeking its services. To address this, the Tiechtels have embarked on an ambitious project to build a new, state-of-the-art Chabad House.
The new facility will provide ample space for students to gather, study, and celebrate. A large lounge area will offer a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, while a spacious dining hall will accommodate Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, and other events. The building will also feature a commercial kosher kitchen, the first of its kind in Lawrence, ensuring that students can enjoy delicious, kosher food both on and off campus.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Chabad House took place recently, marking a significant milestone in this exciting project. With the support of the university, the local community, and generous donors, the Tiechtels are confident that the new building will serve as a beacon of Jewish life for years to come.
