Ida Mae Sutton

Funeral services for Ida Mae Sutton, 90, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. She died Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at her home.

Ida Mae was born January 26, 1924 in Great Bend, KS the daughter of Joseph Bailey and Lora Maurine (Ashpole) Woodburn.

She attended Hutchinson Junior College from 1942 – 1944 while working part-time at Boeing Aircraft, She then attended the University of Kansas from 1944 – 1948 where she received her BA. While attending KU she worked part-time at local doctor offices, she then worked at KU Med as a Lab Technician. And then from 1950 – 1956 she worked full time at local doctor offices and at a well-baby clinic.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Woman, and the First United Methodist Quilting Group. Volunteered at Meals on Wheels for 20 years, was a Sunday school teacher for nine years, a Kappa Phi Alumnus, a Lawrence JayCee Jane, a member of the Medical Assistance Organization, and a member of Astronomical Association of Lawrence.

She married Frederick Earl “Fred” Sutton, Jr. on July 1, 1950 at Danforth Chapel in Lawrence, KS. He preceded her in death on June 10, 2006.

Survivors include one daughter, Elisabeth Susan “Liz” Hamm and husband Gary; one son, Michael A. Sutton and wife, Melissa, Lawrence; and four grandchildren, T.G. Hamm, Samantha Hamm Bronoski, Spencer Hamm and Wendybeth Hamm. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Bernard Woodburn.

The family will greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday, February 3rd at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

The family suggests memorials in her name to Lawrence Humane Society or First United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
