Lawrence to Soon Enforce Snow Removal Rule
Lawrence city officials say the city's snow ordinance will go into effect at 8am on Friday, March 1. The ordinance states that property owners are to remove snow or ice within 48 hours of the end of a snowfall or ice accumulation. The ordinance applies to residential and business properties.
The city will not cite a resident if an attempt has been made to clear the sidewalks.
"We understand that there has been a significant snowfall in Lawrence," said Brian Jimenez, code enforcement manager. "We will only cite property owners if a complaint has been made and verified by our staff and it is clear that no reasonable attempt has been made to clear the sidewalks."
City officials say the snow and ice removal ordinance is in place to create an environment of safe walkways for pedestrians. Property owners will be assessed a fine of $20 for each day the violation occurs, plus court costs.
Complaints regarding suspected code violations can be made by calling 785-832-7700.
