Authorities have now doubled their original reward amount in the effort to solve a string of Lawrence arson fires. The new amount comes following a Friday morning fire in an apartment building at 1809 W. 25th Street in Lawrence. Authorities say it is being investigated as an incident related to the recent string of arson fires, which started October 19 in south-central Lawrence and now number at 15 fires.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now offering $5,000 for anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for these fires. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lawrence Fire-Medical Department at 785-830-7065, the Lawrence Police Department at 785-830-7430, or the TIPS Hotline at 785-843-TIPS (8477). Information can be given anonymously.
Officials say they will continue to ask the Lawrence community to remain vigilant and ensure their smoke alarms are in working order and that all combustible materials are removed from hallways and exit ways. Residents should practice exit drills with family members. The Fire Medical Department will be assisting apartment complexes with the installation of additional smoke alarms and emergency lighting as needed. Anyone wanting assistance with proper smoke alarm installation can call the Fire Medical Department at 785-830-7000.
