'Average' snowfall seems to be getting deeper

Officially, Lawrence receives an average of 21 inches of snow each year. That average has taken a beating in recent years, though. Last winter, 33 inches of snow fell on the city -- and that was nothing compared to the 42 inches that blanketed the area in the winter of 2009-2010. With all that snow, the city is reminding homeowners that the Snow Ordinance will be in effect and enforced this winter. And that applies to your sidewalks. You have 48 hours from whenever the snow stops falling to clear your walks of snow and ice. That applies to public walks only and even then somebody has to complain -- city staff won't be touring the neighborhoods spying on your walkways.
