If they improve it, will more trains come? That's the hope after a railroad station re-hab was celebrated in Lawrence over the weekend...
The city recently agreed to buy the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad's depot and begin restoring it. A major step forward in the plan came with the ribbon-cutting over the weekend of a new handicapped-friendly platform at the former Santa Fe Railroad station that now serves Amtrak trains. Supporters of the project say they're hopeful that improvements in the facility could herald more train service to Lawrence. At the moment, that service consists of only two Amtrak trains a day -- both in the wee-small hours of the night. One use for the station is as a transportation hub for Douglas County, a proposal is now under consideration.
