City of Lawrence pays 20-grand towards algae outbreak

Remember that blue green algae outbreak on the Kaw river? Your tax dollars are going to help study it some more.

Lawrence is joining Topeka, the Kansas Water Office, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the U.S. Geological Survey to fund research on the algae. The city is kicking in 20-thousand dollars of the 136 thousand dollar price tag. They’re hoping the study is going to give water officials an idea of what to expect in the future. Mike Lawless of the city’s Utilities Department says there may be some long term issues that need to be looked at. The Kaw River Water Treatment Plant was shut down briefly while it tested to ensure that none of the blue-green algae was showing up in the treated drinking water. The tests did not detect any blue-green algae in the treated water.
