Community Shelter raises nearly $90,000

Six-hundred and thirty donors have made sure the Lawrence Community Shelter is going to get a new home.

The shelter had to do a full on fund drive over the past two months, in order to raise money to match a half million dollar grant from the Mabee Foundation. And they did it—getting checks that range from five dollars all the way to a hundred thousand dollars. They raised a total of $890-thousand dollars. Now they’ve got the money to buy and renovate a 25-thousand square foot warehouse. It’s going to hold as many as 125 beds...the current shelter only has 75. They expect to start taking construction bids by January.
