Apartment developer wants artificial turf used city wide

Artificial turf versus the real thing...it’s not a baseball debate. It’s topping the agenda for Lawrence City commissioners. KLWN’s Jill Nado has more.

Months ago, the new Tuckaway at Frontier apartment complex in west Lawrence started to install artificial turf. The developer thought it was up to city code...turns out it’s not. Instead of ripping it out and putting in the real thing, they want the city to change the code. They say it’s easier and cheaper to maintain. City commissioners are going to talk about it at tomorrow’s meeting, but Lawrence-Douglas County planning commissioners and the city’s planning staff are recommending that the request be denied. They say there are more greener, better ways to achieve a low-maintenance landscape.
