City to smoke test sewer system

If you’ve got smoke coming into your house on August 18th or 19th, it may not be such a scarey thing after all. KLWN’S Jill Nado explains.

The Lawrence Department of Utilities is planning to smoke test sanitary sewers along Burroughs Creek Trail from 11th Street to 15th Street. Smoke testing is performed by blowing smoke into the sewer pipes. Field crews monitoring the area document locations where smoke escapes the system. That shows them where pipes may need repair. The city says the smoke is non toxic. If you do see smoke coming into your home, ask a Utility Department staff member to check out why the smoke may have entered the home in the first place.
