SRS wants fewer mentally ill sent to KS hospitals

The Kansas Department of Social of Rehabilitation Services wants judges to cut back on the number of mentally ill they send to hospitals. KLWN’s Jill Nado reports.

A top agency official says judges have to understand that the state’s three hospitals that can handle the mentally ill are full. Pedro Moreno, deputy secretary for disability and behavioral health services at SRS, says they need to understand that the hospitals are underfunded…he also says the hospitals have been beyond their capacity for many years. He says about half the patients are refered by community mental health centers. The other half come in because a judge has determined that they are a threat to society. I’m Jill Nado.
