Today on Timeline, Judy Sweets and Jim Ogle and others who support this effort join me to talk about the ways that Grover Barn, a stop on the Underground Railroad, can be used to promote and preserve history in Douglas County. The have named themselves the Guardians of Grover Barn and they are in the beginning of an effort to make good public use of the beautiful stone barn on Lawrence Avenue that has recently served as a fire station for the City of Lawrence. Rumor is that there is a hidden staircase too!
Many of you will also remember this historic barn as the sculpture studio of Poco Frazier who ran track and taught at KU. You can see his work on the exquisite doors of the University of Kansas World War II Memorial, the Campanile.
