This morning on 1320 KLWN we had three special guests in to talk about a unique event soon to happen out at Clinton Lake. They were also here to tell us why they are doing it, and to tell us further about the life and memory they honor, the life of a son, a brother, and a friend, Justin Sneegas. Today we were joined by Linda Sneegas, Justin's mother...Jessica Sneegas, Justin's sister...and Raven Rajani, a friend to Justin who knew him only briefly before he died, but continues to be impacted by his life and positive attitude--so much so, that she has been inspired to run 50 miles in his memory, joining the Sneegas family in paying it forward and raising money along the way for 2 groups dedicated to children and pets, things Justin cared deeply about.
It was one week ago that Ohio's fourth-largest city, Toledo (with a population around a half-million), experienced a water crisis in which algal blooms potentially affected Lake Erie, Toledo's water supply. This prompted a "Do Not Drink/Do Not Boil" Advisory for the whole of the community, essentially shutting down taps in homes, businesses, and city infrastructure. The advisory was lifted two days later, and Toledo works to get back to normal. Today we look more into that response--and emergency collaboration in general--with the help of a professor here in Lawrence at the University of Kansas. Dr. Holly Goerdel is an associate professor in the KU School of Public Affairs and Administration, who has researched emergency management planning.
It was 1937 when Kansas' own Amelia Earhart set forth to make history and fly around the world. She did not finish her journey, her flight disappearing over the South Pacific. But her legacy lives on in those who find inspiration in her life and adventures. This includes Amelia Rose Earhart, a pilot who just completed a round-the-world flight in honor of her namesake. We talked to her about her name, her plane, her trip around the world along the very same path, and her ongoing efforts to get more young women into aviation through the Fly With Amelia Foundation. She also has a Lawrence connection! Give it a quick listen!
