Judge George W. Corcoran

A Mass of Christian Burial for Judge George W. Corcoran, 91, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Interment will follow at Corinth Cemetery in Prairie Village, KS. He died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at his home.

He was born on March 16, 1923 in Georgetown, District of Columbia Washington, DC. He was the son of George W. Corcoran, Sr. and Agnes (Curran) Corcoran.

He graduated in 1954 with a B.A. Degree from the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri with a Juris Doctorate Law Degree in 1957.

He practiced Law, was an Administrative Law Judge and a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Kansas.

He married Mary Mellott on January 6, 1945 lasting 65 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Patricia McCracken, Fairway, KS; one son, George Kevin Corcoran, Thornton, CO; nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Laurie Ann Stair.

Mrs. Agnes Corcoran mother of Judge Corcoran was the Specification Secretary for Marsh and Peter Architects on the construction of the Walter Reed Hospital. Judge Arthur J. Mellott, father-in-law of Judge Corcoran, was appointed to the Federal Bench as a Federal Judge by President Harry S. Truman and taught the President Law as a Professor of Law at the Old Kansas City School of Law.

Judge Corcoran’s grandfather, Michael Curran, fought with Theodore Roosevelt’s Volunteer Calvary in the Spanish-American War, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in the Roosevelt’s Rough Rider Section.

Judge George W. Corcoran, Jr. served in North Africa and Sicily overseas with the U.S. Navy in World War II.
